2.2 Verbs ending with -ar
Verbs in Spanish are classified as either "regular" or "irregular" verbs. We will start with "regular" verbs, which constitute the majority of verbs in Spanish.
First of all, we need to identify the stem of the verb. This is done by removing the -ar, -er, or -ir ending from the verb. For example, the stem for the verb trabajar (to work) is trabaj. Now we can conjugate the verb by putting the proper ending in place of the -ar:
| yo |
-o |
nosotros/nosotras |
-amos |
| tú |
-as |
vosotros/vosotras |
-áis |
| él, ella |
-a |
ellos/ellas |
-an |
Now you take the stem and form the conjugation by using the right endings:
| yo trabajo = I work |
| tú trabajas = you work |
| él trabaja = he work |
| ella trabaja = she work |
| nosotros trabajamos = we work (masculine) |
| nosotras trabjamos = we work (feminine) |
| vosotros trabajáis = you work (masculine) |
| vosotras trabajáis = you work (feminine) |
| ellos trabajan = they work (masculine) |
| ellas trabajan = they work (feminine) |
Here is a second example -- the stem of the verb hablar (to talk) is habl (ar is removed ):
Now again use the right endings to form the conjugation:
| yo hablo = I speak |
| tú hablas = you speak |
| él habla = he speak |
| ella habla = she speak |
| nosotros hablamos = we speak (masculine) |
| nosotras hablamos = we speak (feminine) |
| vosotros habláis = you speak (masculine) |
| vosotras habláis = you speak (feminine) |
| ellos hablan = they speak (masculine) |
| ellas hablan = they speak (feminine) |
