Frequently Asked Questions

How should I select a tutor? Are they all the same?

The choice of tutor is important because the teaching styles and attributes of each tutor differ, sometimes significantly. Some tutors are bilingual (English/Spanish), while others speak only Spanish. There are tutors who work with beginners only, while others work with advanced and superior students only. Finally, some tutors offer structured lessons, while others focus primarily on conversation. Please review each tutor’s profile before scheduling a lesson. These bios are on the scheduling page as well as “Our Tutors” page.

Where are the teachers located?

Our teachers are located in Guatemala and other Latin American countries.

Are the instructors native Spanish speakers?

Yes, all of our instructors are native Spanish speakers, mostly from Latin American countries. You will be speaking Spanish from the very first lesson.

Do you offer lessons that are specific to certain specialties such as healthcare, technology, construction, etc.?

Although we do not currently offer structured lessons in such specific areas, one of the benefits of a private tutor is that the lesson can be customized to the needs of the student. If there is a particular area of interest that you would like to discuss, please share this with your tutor.

Here are some links to online Spanish lessons related to special focus areas that you may want to review and share with your tutor:

Do your instructors have any sort of language education (i.e degrees in Spanish or language acquisition)?

We have a range of instructors — ALL with certifications to teach Spanish. Some have education degrees as well.

What time zone are you in?

Guatemala Time is the current local time for the instructors in Guatemala, and it is the time used on the NuLengua website for scheduling. This time is usually GMT-6, but can change if Daylight Savings Time is in effect. Current Guatemala Time is displayed on every page of this site and the scheduling page also reinforces this as well. Please note that all times are given in Guatemala Time unless otherwise noted.

How can I convert Guatemala Time to my time zone so that I can properly schedule a class?

We recommend the time zone converter tool offered by TimeAndDate.com for converting to and from Guatemala Time. Select "Guatemala-Guatemala"… We also offer a time zone chart that we do our best to keep updated. However, keep in mind that this chart can be used for current time zone conversions, but maybe not for future scheduling because of changes to and from Daylight Savings Time. Furthermore, for a quick comparison between your local time and Guatemala Time, simply check the “Current Guatemala Time” at the top of this page.

For more information on time zones, as well as many useful conversion tools, visit http://www.timeanddate.com/. Of course, if you have any questions, you can always contact us.

Even with the time zone info, it’s difficult to convert the starting time of my scheduled class from Guatemala Time to my local time. Can you help?

Time zone issues can definitely be tricky. If you are uncertain, please contact us for assistance.

I’ve got a class scheduled in a few hours and I forgot what I’m supposed to do to make it happen. Can you help?

Prior to the start of your class, you must log onto Skype. If you are unfamiliar with this service, it is recommended that you log on 10 minutes prior to your scheduled class. If possible, we recommend that you log into your NuLengua account several hours before your class to verify the start time. You should see a message indicating how many hours until your class begins. If you feel there is an error with the time shown, please contact us. Within 10 minutes of the start time of your scheduled class, a “BEGIN CLASS” button will appear next to the message on your NuLengua account home page. Click on this button once it becomes enabled. The teacher will call you over Skype at the designated start time.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

Lessons cancelled with less than 48 hours notice of the scheduled date/time will be deducted from the student’s tokens and will be marked on the Nulengua calendar as “Absent Student.” No make-up class will be granted. To cancel or reschedule a class with more than 48 hours notice, login to your account and select the “Cancel a Lesson” link on the left navigation.

What if I experience technical problems during my lesson?

Please e-mail us immediately at [email protected]. We want to ensure that you have the best learning experience as possible and will make arrangements for you to complete the lesson or to provide a refund if you so desire.

What if I want a refund? What is your refund policy?

Our goal is 100% satisfaction, but we do recognize there are circumstances in which refunds are requested. PayPal does not allow refunds more than 60 days after purchase. However, within 60 days of purchase, NuLengua offers a refund on unused tokens minus a $20 processing fee. Please e-mail [email protected] for more information.
